Term 1 - Week 6 - 2022

Principal News

5/6 Surfing

It was great to be able to go down to Ocean Grove beach this week to see our 5/6 students take part in surfing lessons as part of the Phys Ed program. We are fortunate to have been able to access Sporting Schools money to run this program and our kids have been fantastic. Mrs Young reports everybody was able to have a red hot go and even if unsure or nervous they gave it a try. We have a few budding surfers out there now!

Auction Time

As many of you are aware, there will be an auction at the Strawberry fair this year. For the success of the auction, we rely on the generosity of family, friends, and local businesses for donations.
If you or someone you know owns a business that is able to provide a donation (generally in the form of a voucher or service), please contact Pip Gent via email pipgent05@gmail.com Your support will be greatly appreciated.

Reminder: Monday 14th March- Labour Day Public Holiday - school closed

Our commitment to Child Safety

As part of our school’s commitment to Child Safety, we are in the process of reviewing all policies related to the Child Safe Standards. Attached below for your information is our updated Child Safety Policy 2022 -2024.
Prior to this policy being ratified at our next School Council meeting, the policy is shared with the school community for consultation. Please take a few minutes to read over this policy when convenient. Should you have any comments or feedback regarding the policy, please myself at our front office.

NAPLAN Years 3 & 5

The National Assessment Program of Literacy and Numeracy is scheduled to commence from May 10th, 2022. An information document will be sent home with Year 3 & 5 students in the coming weeks and a digital copy will also be made available. This year all tests will be completed online. Please discuss any concerns with your child’s teacher in the first instance but more information will be distributed throughout the term and early next term.

COVIDSafe Updates

The Victorian Government has announced a 6-week extension of some of the COVIDSafe measures for schools.
In summary, there will continue to be a focus on the “3Vs” of ventilation, vaccination and vital COVIDSafe steps. This will see either a continuation or elimination of the following:

  • The use of rapid antigen tests (RATs) as a screening tool will continue for the remainder of term 1 and families should anticipate receiving their next allocation prior to week 7.
  • Victorians aged over 5 years are now eligible to receive a COVID-19 vaccine. Vaccinations are available at state vaccination centres, participating GP clinics, pharmacies, or community health services. Please chat to your local GP for more information.
  • Face Masks - staff, students (Years 3-6) and on-site visitors/volunteers will be required to wear a face mask when indoors.

Prep 2023 Enrolments

We have begun taking enrolments for Prep for next year – both from siblings of current students and from new families to Wallington. If you have a child currently attending 4-year-old kindergarten and are looking to enrol them for Prep 2023, please complete the enrolment form (CLICK HERE) or alternatively collect a hardcopy from the General Office.

Wanted in the Art Room – any unwanted ‘junk’ jewellery (brooches, earrings, necklaces) for an art project. Please leave at the front office over the next two weeks.  Thank you.

Daily attendance is important for all children and young people to succeed in education and to ensure they do not fall behind both socially and developmentally. Both schools and parents have an important role to play in supporting students to attend school every day and to be at school on time and ready to learn.
Our school attendance data is higher than schools like us and staff have reported students arriving late to school and, in some cases, this is becoming a pattern. When students arrive late, they miss important introductions to the school day, impacting on how the settle into the routines of school and further impacting socially and academically. If you would like to speak to someone regarding your child’s attendance or lateness, we are here to help.

Year 5/6s - All About Me Hoodies

This term, 5/6s created 'All About Me' hoodies for their first artwork. Given a hoodie template, students used a variety of mediums from paint, poscas and textas to create patterns, colour and line. Using a bubble writing technique, students wrote their name and when they were established, added other details of age and their House colour.  Descriptive words about their personality were written or glued on around them. The results are fabulous!
