Playground Update
Last week I had a meeting with the architects that have been commissioned to design our new inclusive playground. They have some great ideas around how the playground might look and fit more naturally into the space we have. Below is the first draft of what might our playground will look like.

I can’t wait for the project to be get underway and hopefully in the new year we will see the playground begin to take shape.

Curriculum Day
The next Curriculum day will be held on Friday the 26th August 2022.  Our staff will be commencing the Berry Street Training Model (mentioned in last weeks newsletter).  Please note that this is a student free day.

Network Meeting
Last Thursday and Friday I had the opportunity to spend some time with the Leadership Teams from other schools in our network (Barwon South Eastern). The two days were spent reconnecting to each other after two years of video conferencing and set the direction for the Network for the future. It was very valuable time together as we all work to improve the outcomes for all students and schools in the network. It is also great to be able to share the knowledge that each school holds and to be able to tap into it to support us on our improvement journey.

Story Dogs
Last term we introduced a wonderful program with the Year 2 students called Story Dogs. Story Dogs is a team of volunteers with a wide range of dog breeds who come into schools and have children read to the dogs. This is not a reading program; the dog handlers are not trained educators in any way. It is about helping students develop a love of reading, building their confidence in reading aloud, and overcoming anxiety about reading to another person. We have been lucky enough to have Sally, (and her owner Liz), come into the Year 2 classrooms every Tuesday and listen to some of our students read. The students have thoroughly enjoyed this and look forward to Sally’s arrival every week. We will be running a fundraising event for the Story Dogs program soon, as it is a volunteer program and in order for them to continue their good work, they need our support. Stay tuned for details in our school newsletter soon!

RAT (Rapid Antigen Testing) Kits
If your family need more RAT Kits, please contact our office and we will arrange for some to be sent home. Tests will not be sent home to all students during term 3 and will be supplied to close contacts, symptomatic cases or as requested.

Parent Resources
From time to time, families seek support, advice and guidance on multiple aspects of their child’s development. This includes, “how can I help my child write better” or “how much screen time should I allow my child?” While there is a vast array of resources available, the ‘Generation Next’ website is full of information and support on a range of topics. Some of the most recent ‘stories’ include:

  • 6 Ways Parents can Help their Primary Kids Learn to Write Well
  • Is IQ more important than ever?
  • ‘Screen Time’ for kids is an outdated concept, so let’s ditch it and focus on quality instead

Year 2s - Flower Pots

Year 2s created a 3D flower by making beads, petals and a flower head using air dry clay.  While these where drying, students explored Australian artist Minnie Pwerle's style of paintings and replicated their own interpretation of her work on a black vase with posca pens.

Students painted the clay flowers with acrylic paints.

They look amazing! Well done Year 2s.
