Mathematics

At Wallington Primary School, our Mathematics program is centered on evidence-based teaching approaches and tailored to support students of all abilities to achieve success through responsive teaching practices. We aim to provide students with a robust foundation in mathematical skills, strategies, and understanding, enabling them to effectively use these skills in various contexts. Our goal is for students to build strong foundations and confidence in key mathematical skills in order to succeed in all four proficiencies: Understanding, Fluency, Problem Solving and Reasoning.

Through explicit durect instruction, we ensure that concepts are clearly taught and understood. Real-life examples are integrated into lessons, helping students see the relevance and importance of mathematics in everyday life.

We have a structured sequence of learning whereby lesson objectives from the Victorian Curriculum 2.0 build upon previously learned concepts, including daily opportunities for reviewing and practising past learning. Staff proactively engage in professional development and collaboration, enhancing our use of evidence-based teaching strategies to enhance student achievement. We use timely and accurate feedback and assessment data to guide our teaching, differentiating our instruction to best meet the needs of all learners, endeavouring to ensure that all learners are appropriately challenged in all lessons.
