Building Confident and Capable Mathematicians

At Wallington Primary School, we believe every child can become a confident and capable mathematician. Our mathematics program combines explicit teaching, carefully sequenced learning and regular practice and review, giving students the strong foundations they need to understand, apply and enjoy mathematics.

Supporting Every Learner

Every student can learn mathematics successfully with the right support, challenge and opportunities to practise. Our teachers respond to students' learning needs throughout each lesson, providing additional support where needed and extending students when they are ready for greater challenge.

Our goal is for every student to develop the knowledge, skills and confidence to use mathematics successfully — at school, in everyday life and as they continue their learning journey.

Learning Mathematics

New mathematical concepts are clearly explained and modelled before students practise with support and gradually apply their learning independently. We regularly revisit previously taught knowledge and skills so that important learning is remembered, strengthened and built upon over time.

Our teachers use ongoing assessment and checks for understanding to identify what students know, address misconceptions and provide the right level of support or challenge. This ensures students can build their knowledge at an appropriate pace while continuing to experience success and develop confidence.

Mathematics is about much more than getting the right answer. Students develop four key mathematical proficiencies:

  • Understanding – developing knowledge of mathematical ideas and how they connect.

  • Fluency – becoming accurate, efficient and confident with mathematical skills and facts.

  • Problem-solving – applying mathematical knowledge and strategies to solve problems, including unfamiliar situations.

  • Reasoning – explaining mathematical thinking, making connections and justifying solutions.

We want students to understand why mathematics works, not simply learn a procedure to follow. Through rich learning experiences, students are encouraged to explain their thinking, make connections and apply mathematics to meaningful situations and the world around them.
