Principal's Report
Dear Families,
Strengthening Engagement and Learning at Wallington Primary School
At Wallington Primary School, we continue to place a strong and deliberate focus on strengthening student engagement so that all students consistently experience happy, focused and productive learning time in every classroom. Over the past two years, we have made significant progress through the introduction of clear behaviour expectations and routines, strengthened wellbeing practices, and a shared values-based approach to learning and school life.
Building on this strong foundation, our current work is about refinement and consistency, striving for even greater excellence in every classroom, every day, for every student. This work aligns with our School-Wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS) expectations, Berry Street Education Model routines, and evidence-informed teaching practices. Together, these approaches support consistency in expectations, routines, and responses to behaviour across the school.
Importantly, the overwhelming majority of our students consistently demonstrate our school values and contribute positively to school life each day. We celebrate these behaviours through positive reinforcement, tokens, rewards and awards, and regularly receive positive feedback from across our wider school community about the way our students represent Wallington Primary School.
A key focus is ensuring learning time is well protected for all students. To support this, we are further strengthening consistent approaches to behaviour, including clear correction steps and structured reflection time. This includes the introduction of a ‘Make It Right’ room, where students may be supported to reflect on behavioural choices during lunch play following incidents of behaviour that disrupt learning. Parents/carers will be notified when their child attends the Make It Right room. Reflection is an important part of learning, helping students pause, reset and return to learning more successfully.
We are also focusing on:
Clear teaching of expectations and routines
Consistent responses to behaviour across classrooms
Proactive strategies that support engagement and appropriate challenge
Using positive reinforcement as the primary behaviour strategy, supported by correction when required
How Families Can Support This Work
We ask families to support the clear expectations we have in place at school. A shared commitment to learning between school and home is essential, and we ask for your support in reinforcing this message at home.
Staff will continue to communicate directly with families about their child’s learning and behaviour. We also recognise that mistakes are a normal part of learning and we will always work with students and families in a constructive and solution-focused way.
To maintain consistency, we ask that families:
Support school expectations and staff decisions
Work in partnership with us when concerns arise
Understand that we cannot discuss other students or their circumstances
This shared approach helps ensure a consistent, respectful and focused learning environment for all students.
Attendance - Attendance Matters at Our School
As we move through the term, we want to take a moment to highlight just how important regular attendance is for every student's learning and wellbeing.
Why Attendance Counts
Research consistently shows that students who attend school regularly are more engaged, build stronger relationships with their peers and teachers, and achieve better outcomes across all areas of learning. Even small amounts of missed time can add up, and when students are at school consistently, they are better able to participate fully in classroom activities, follow the flow of lessons, and feel connected to their school community.
Our Approach
At WPS school, we take a supportive and encouraging approach to attendance. We know that life sometimes gets in the way, and we're here to work alongside families to help overcome any barriers. Our focus is always on understanding, communicating, and finding solutions together.
If your child is absent for any reason, please remember to update Compass with the reason for the absence for every absence. This helps us ensure your child's safety and allows us to offer support where it's needed.
Celebrating Great Attendance
We love recognising students who make the effort to be at school every day. Starting this term, students with 90% attendance or above for the term will go into the draw for our ‘Every Day Counts’ termly attendance raffle - a small way of saying well done for your commitment and engagement in your education.
A Reminder for Families
As partners in your child's education, we ask that you help prioritise attendance wherever possible. If you need to schedule appointments or holidays, we encourage you to do so outside school hours when you can. If extended absences are unavoidable, please let your child's teacher know at least two weeks in advance so we can plan together.

P&F Events
Don’t forget to grab your tickets for our upcoming Wallington PS Disco on Friday 5th June! Tickets are available now through School24, with sales closing on 29th May.
Orders are also now open for our Term 2 Special Fish & Chips Lunch happening on Tuesday 16th June. Orders close on 4th June.
The next P&F Meeting will be held at school next Monday 18th May at 9:00am. New faces are always welcome, and we encourage any parents or carers interested in supporting school events and community initiatives to come along.
Drama Incursion
Our school is fortunate to have been given the opportunity to take part in a free Drama Incursion on Monday 1st June. Students from Prep to Year 5 will participate in an engaging drama session led by a visiting drama teacher.
Throughout the sessions, students will explore performance skills, creativity, confidence and teamwork through a range of fun and interactive drama activities. Students will also take part in some simple performance practice in class, giving them a taste of what’s to come later this year. This exciting experience will help build momentum towards a major highlight in Term 3… when the Circus comes to Wallington and our students put on a performance to remember!
Advance Notice – Proposed Stop Work Industrial Action: Tuesday 26th May
Just a reminder that there remains a possibility of further Stop Work action with a half day planned for our region on Tuesday 26th May. As soon as I have confirmation and specific details, I will share them with you. Thank you for your understanding.

PE and Dance
PE /Dance Weekly Snapshot
Students continued developing their AFL abilities, practising marking, handballing and simple team strategies. We warmed up with Stuck in the Mud, freeing teammates by rolling the ball through their legs, building coordination and control.
Lower Years – Space & Strategy Games
Younger students explored how to use space to support their team through activities such as Plan the Pass, Team Shape Builder, Goal‑Scoring Relay and Island Hopping.
Year 2 – Superhero Dance
Year 2 students worked on expressive movement through a superhero‑themed dance lesson. After stretching and discussing superpowers, students created and performed their own superhero actions. They practised performing in canon and unison, focusing on expression, timing and teamwork. The lesson finished with a cool‑down and reflection on how they showed their superhero powers through movement.
Champion of the Week Award
Congratulations to Charlie & Piper in Grade 6.
This week’s Champions of the Week go to Charlie and Piper for stepping up as fantastic leaders during our netball drills in PE. They helped run activities with confidence, encouraged others, and showed what real teamwork looks like.
Their actions reflected our school values beautifully — Respect in the way they supported their peers, Responsibility in taking charge of the drills, and Resilience in staying focused and positive throughout.

Notice Board
Unexplained absences
Please check Compass for any unexplained absences for your child/s for 2026, if you could put an explanation for each one before the end of term.
An unexplained absence in compass us a record indicating that a student was marked “not present” (absent or late) without a reason entered by a parent/guardian. It means that school is aware the student is missing but not why.
How to Fix: Under the "Attendance" tab, the "Unexplained" tab lists these absences. Parents can select the relevant dates and click "Explain with Note/Approval" to provide a reason.
Why It Matters: Schools are required to ensure they know the safety of students and keep attendance records, requiring a reason for every day a student is absent/late.

SAVER PLUS
What it is:
Financial Education and Savings:
Saver Plus is a 10-month online program designed to help participants learn about financial management, set savings goals, and develop regular saving habits.
Matched Savings:
Participants who complete the program have their savings matched by ANZ, up to a maximum of $500, which can be used for education-related costs.
Online Delivery:
The program is delivered online, making it accessible to participants across Australia.
Saver Plus is a partnership between ANZ, the Brotherhood of St. Laurence, The Smith Family and Berry Street.
Eligibility: To be eligible, participants need to have a current Health Care or Pensioner Concession Card and an eligible Centrelink payment, have other regular income, be studying themselves or have a child in school, be 18+ years old, and agree to join in free online financial education workshops.
