Dear Families,
Welcome to Term 2! I hope everyone had a restful and happy school holidays and you are feeling energised and ready to go for another exciting term at Wallington Primary School! Welcome especially to several new families starting this term – we know you are going to love it here.
Fundraising Success – Thank You!
A big congratulations and thank you to our wonderful P&F and to everyone who supported our recent fundraising efforts.
Our Easter Morning Tea, Hot Cross Buns and Easter Raffle raised an impressive $1,112, while the Guess the Egg competition contributed $169 to the Good Friday Appeal. We are incredibly grateful for the generosity of our community!

Our School Looking Its Best
It’s been fantastic to return to school and see the grounds and facilities looking so well maintained and refreshed.
Over the holidays a number of improvements were completed, including the installation of split system heating and cooling in the Art/STEM room and Hall, new gutter guards on the main building, and fresh sand in the sandpits. I was also able to repaint the inside of our First Nations Hub in white, offering a much-needed refresh that now means the space is looking as good as the rest of the school!
These ongoing improvements make a real difference to the learning environment for our students and are something we can all take pride in. Thank you to Steve, our new maintenance and grounds employee, who is doing a great job around the school. Also thank you to the parent volunteers who continue their awesome work supporting our chickens and gardens during and between terms!
Caring for Our Grounds – Rabbit Control
One of the by-products of our beautiful, open environment is that we share it with local wildlife, which can sometimes include an abundance of rabbits.
This month, the school has joined a local Landcare Rabbit Sweep Cluster, working in partnership with neighbouring properties to coordinate effective control measures across the area.
There are a number of strategies being discussed in the neighbourhood cluster, including regular checks and repairs to fences, and filling rabbit holes and burrows. The school recently jointly funded rabbit-preventing fencing with one of our neighbouring properties and we are also planning improvements to our gates.
A simple but important way everyone can help is by ensuring all our gates are kept closed at all times. This small action makes a significant difference in limiting access and supporting the community’s broader efforts. Thank you for your support in helping us maintain our grounds.
SunSmart – Hat Expectations
As a proud SunSmart school, we actively promote safe sun behaviours at school and in the community.
In line with SunSmart guidelines, students are required to wear a hat whenever UV levels are 3 or above. In our local conditions, this means:
Hats are compulsory from mid-August through to the end of April
During this time, students must wear a hat when outdoors
We have added a UV index widget to our website to help families see when sun protection is recommended each day.
While UV levels begin to drop as we move into winter, hat use is still encouraged throughout May during peak UV in the middle of the day.
Strawberry Fair 2026 – Initial Planning Meeting
We are excited to begin planning for the 2026 Strawberry Fair, with an initial meeting to be held on Tuesday 5th May at 4:30pm - 5:00pm in the staffroom. All are welcome to attend.
This meeting will focus on the establishment of a small coordinator committee, which will form the core planning group for this year’s event. The initial coordinator roles include Planning/Permits, Stall Holders and Food Vendors, Entertainment and Activities, Auction, and Publicity/Social Media.
Following the success of last year’s event, the intention is to retain a similar structure. Many of these roles are well defined and will provide a clear framework for those stepping into coordination responsibilities, with work shared across the committee.
Further volunteers and additional responsibilities will be sought later in the year, from the beginning of Term 3, as we move into the next stage of detailed planning and event preparation.
Importantly, the Strawberry Fair relies on sufficient volunteer support to establish and sustain this coordination group. Without this foundation, we will not be in a position to proceed with the event in 2026.
If you are unable to attend the meeting but would like to be involved in due course, please contact the school to register your interest. Regular coordinator meetings will commence in Term 3 as planning steps up and finer details are developed.
ANZAC Day* – Saturday 25th April
This Saturday, student representatives from Wallington Primary School will proudly take part in the ANZAC Day Service at Ocean Grove Park. The march starts at 9:45am in the Ocean Grove Main Street before the ANZAC Day Service at 10:00am, where our students will lay a wreath and read The Dedication.
*A reminder that ANZAC Day falls on a Saturday this year and there is no substitute public holiday on the Monday.

Guess The Eggs?!
Well done everyone - we raised $169 for the Royal Children’s Hospital - Good Friday Appeal!
What was the Easter fundraising money used for?
Our Easter fundraisers (hot cross buns, raffle and Easter morning tea) raised money for the Grade 6 Graduation leaves and gifts and contribution to the running
costs of the Garden Club. Thanks to the generosity of our magnificent Wallington Primary community!!

Garden Club will be on every Wednesday at second lunch (1.40pm)

We are creating a boot garden in term 2 and trying to include as many students as possible. We are collecting boots of any shape, type or size.
Garden Exchange - Please help yourself to our freshly grown vegetables on display at the front of school. Please also share anything from your gardens here too.

PE and Dance
PE /Dance Weekly Snapshot
Our PE lessons have been full of energy and skill‑building this week, with each group exploring something new and exciting.
Soccer Skills
Some classes have been developing their foundational soccer skills. Students have been practising running and dribbling with control, passing accurately, and moving into space during small‑sided games. These activities help build confidence, teamwork, and strong fundamental movement skills.
Striking & Coordination
Other classes have been focusing on striking skills. Students have been learning how to hold equipment correctly and strike an object with control. This unit strengthens hand‑eye coordination and helps students feel more capable using a variety of equipment.
Dance – Grade 2
Our Grade 2 students have been exploring how movement can express different emotions. Through body shapes, levels, and expressive movement, they’ve been discovering how dance can communicate feelings and tell a story.
Champion of the Week Award
Congratulations to Jack W in Grade 1.
Jack is our Champion of the Week for his fantastic throwing and catching during PE. He showed excellent hand–eye coordination, tracking the ball and timing each movement with real control.

Breakfast Club
A reminder to families that our Breakfast Club is running every Tuesday and Wednesday morning before school—everyone is welcome to come along and enjoy a healthy start to the day.

Unexplained absences
Please check Compass for any unexplained absences for your child/s for 2026, if you could put an explanation for each one before the end of term.
An unexplained absence in compass us a record indicating that a student was marked “not present” (absent or late) without a reason entered by a parent/guardian. It means that school is aware the student is missing but not why.
How to Fix: Under the "Attendance" tab, the "Unexplained" tab lists these absences. Parents can select the relevant dates and click "Explain with Note/Approval" to provide a reason.
Why It Matters: Schools are required to ensure they know the safety of students and keep attendance records, requiring a reason for every day a student is absent/late.

What it is:
Financial Education and Savings:
Saver Plus is a 10-month online program designed to help participants learn about financial management, set savings goals, and develop regular saving habits.
Matched Savings:
Participants who complete the program have their savings matched by ANZ, up to a maximum of $500, which can be used for education-related costs.
Online Delivery:
The program is delivered online, making it accessible to participants across Australia.
Saver Plus is a partnership between ANZ, the Brotherhood of St. Laurence, The Smith Family and Berry Street.
Eligibility: To be eligible, participants need to have a current Health Care or Pensioner Concession Card and an eligible Centrelink payment, have other regular income, be studying themselves or have a child in school, be 18+ years old, and agree to join in free online financial education workshops.
